The crisp morning air and golden leafs bring on my favorite season–autumn–where apples are at their prime and ready for picking! A bushel of freshly picked Golden Delicious apples always gets me thinking on ways to recreate some of October’s sweetest apple treats.
If apple picking is on your bucket list, you’ll definitely want to bookmark a few of the apple orchard’s Virginia has to offer!
1. Carter Mountain Orchard – Charlottesville, VA
Carter Mountain Orchard welcomes visitors from mid-April through December and is located just minutes from Thomas Jefferson’s home.
From now until mid-December, you can enjoy freshly picked apples, apple cider, apple cider donuts, tasty apple pies, and apple caramel cookies. In the fall months, the orchard is also brimmed with pumpkins, gourds, and Indian corn.
2. Sunrise Orchards – Staunton, VA
This pick-your-own orchard overlooks the beautiful Blueridge Mountains and offers Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and Jonathan apples starting the second week in September through the the beginning of October or until the apples are all gone.
3. Vintage Virginia Apples – North Garden, VA
Beginning every November, Vintage Virginia Apples offers a variety of apple and fruit trees for sale. For the last 8 years, the orchard has also offered tastings of they distinctive ciders–Arkansas Black, Brut D’Albemarle, GoldRush, Jupiter’s Legacy, Old Virginia, Winesap, Pomme Mary, Ragged Mountain, Red Hill, and Royal Pippin.
4. Drumheller’s Orchard – Lovingston, VA
Drumheller’s Orchard is a fifth generation farm that offers 21 different varieties of fresh apples starting late August through early November.
5. Showalter Orchard & Greenhouse – Timberville, VA
Showalter Orchard & Greenhouse grows more than 25 varieties of delicious apples throughout the year. Visitors have the opportunity to pick fresh from the tree while overlooking 40 breath-taking acres of the Shenandoah Valley.
Looking for more than just fruit? The family-friendly orchard is known for their Old Hill Cider–pressed and bottled on site along with jams, jellies, and even apple butter!
6. Stribling Orchard – Markham, VA
The Stribling Orchard family has grown fruit for more than 200 years! From mid-August through early November you can drink cider, see historic buildings, visit farm animals, and pick apples all while enjoying breath-taking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Can’t make it to the orchard? No problem! Jams and jellies are available for purchase year round on their website.
7. Hartland Orchard – Markham, VA
Hartland Orchard, located in the scenic hills near Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Mountains, adds new varieties of apples every year!
8. Fruit Hill Orchard – Palmyra, VA
Fruit Hill Orchard doesn’t just offer fresh fruit, but also fresh baked bread, pies, and apple butter!
9. Ayers Orchard – Cana, VA
Located just a few miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway, Ayers Orchard is a family owned and operated farm that harvests apples from June through early October.
10. Silver Creek Orchard – Tyro, VA
The third weekend in September pick your own apples, rain or shine, at Silver Creek Orchard!
11. Morris Orchard – Monroe, VA
Pick from 16 different varieties of apples at Morris Orchard. When the pick your own apple season is over, you can enjoy freshly pressed apple cider.
12. A J Gross & Sons – Beford, VA
Gross’ Orchard, like many orchards in the area, is a family owned and operated orchard which has been in business since before the turn of the century. The orchard specializes in mountain grown apples that are ready for picking starting September 1st.
13. Henley’s Orchard – Crozet, VA
Henley’s Orchard has been producing quality apples since 1932 and now their fruit is carried by local markets all over Central Virginia. Customers are welcomed daily during the growing season to pick from over 25 varieties of apples.
14. Graves Mountain Farm – Syria, VA

17. Seaman’s Orchard – Lovingston, VA
Nestled at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Seamans’ Orchard is filled with new and mature trees producing a wide variety of apples including: Empire, Gala, Gold Delicious, Fuji, Jonagold, Red Delicious, Honey Crisp, and Pink Lady.
